You fly the colorful and agile aircraft of WWI as you make history in the world's first use of aircraft in a military role. This is the basic game. You have everything you need to play single aircraft duels to multi-aircraft dogfights. Each aircraft has its own unique characteristics reflected in its ratings and special abilities. The basic game rules cover all the maneuvers that made WWI aerial combat: barrel rolls, stall turns, Immelmans, vertical rolls and Candelles. Outmaneuver your opponent to line up your guns and watch his planes go down in flames! Gamers who have played the Down in Flames game series will find many similarities in game play, however, previous experience is not necessary. Launched with limited artillery support and using several raw New Army divisions, the ostensible aim of the British attack was to seize the German rail lines behind the front, but in reality was a diversion for the main French offensive in Champagne. At Loos, no one moved faster than a man on foot, and fire support was clumsy, unreliable, and inflexible. Playing time around 4 hours.

STORM OF STEEL (SoS) is a complete simulation of World War I. Three maps cover Europe from the Pyrenees to the Urals along with the Middle East. Fighting rages from St. Petersburg to Verdun to Baghdad and beyond. The maps can be combined for one grand campaign game, or they can be used separately for theater-level campaigns of the Eastern front, Western front and Middle East fronts. Nearly two dozen scenarios allow players to focus on one year and one front, one year on all fronts, start a campaign game from the beginning of any year, play the Eastern front for the entire war, play an alternative history 1919 scenario, or play a Grand Campaign of the entire war. Turns are quarterly, with all units able to move and fight in at least one impulse per turn. Campaign Cards simulate the designation of objectives and logistical preparations, and provide additional impulses and potential combat bonuses to recreate the intense offensives of the war. Units represent land, naval and air forces. Ground forces are portrayed at corps level. Each corps is rated for the number of divisions it includes; so players can concentrate for the offensive or disperse for the defense. Corps types include infantry, shock troops, mountain infantry and cavalry.

There are also specialized armored car and tank brigades, as well as tank corps for 1919, plus the planned-for American airborne division. Each country has its own unique order of battle. For example, the Austro-Hungarians have mountain corps, and there are also additional units representing Bolshevik and independent nationalist forces. Naval units are at the squadron level for capital ships, and flotillas for cruisers and destroyers. Surface engagements, naval bombardment, even amphibious assaults are possible. Naval combat requires opposing fleets to acquire each other and then engage in gunnery. Light fleet units are invaluable for recon and screening, while battleship and battlecruiser squadrons provide killing power. The British Royal Navy is able to impose a blockade that Germany may try to break.

There is also commerce raiding, including unrestricted submarine warfare, for attacks on merchant shipping, as well as convoy escorts for defense. Air warfare is represented by strategic and tactical wings. A unique feature of the game allows for improving aerial warfare capabilities by increasing air doctrine levels. As air doctrine improves, players can employ increasingly sophisticated aerial missions including interception, aerial supply and para-drops. Psychological warfare is an important element in trying to maintain the morale of friendly forces while undermining the enemys morale. Land combat uses three different combat results tables to model variable tactics. Assault combat is bloody and often results in exchanges. Probes are used to try to push the enemy back while minimizing losses. Tank and shock troop units can use infiltration to attempt breakthroughs.

Mobilization and production give players the capability to produce different forces. Several types of infantry, as well as other unit types and enhancements, allow players to trade quantity for quality or build specialized forces for particular objectives. Industrial output varies as the home front reacts to the need for greater force, but eventually collapses if morale and other factors overtake efforts to sustain the economy. SoS uses cards to generate major operations. Campaign cards give players the opportunity to recreate the major campaigns of the war or refocus those efforts in different ways in an attempt to change the course of the war. Players plan their campaigns, then mobilize and deploy their forces to maximize their campaign card advantages to achieve their objectives. While players can potentially play a campaign card on every front, they will more likely focus their efforts on one front, trying to obtain a knock-out against one country while holding back other countries on other fronts. Other cards provide for improvements in weapons and tactics, such as Air Doctrine, Poison Gas and Tank Brigades. Yet other cards provide for other events and contingencies such as conducting military campaigns in the colonies, reacting to the enemy efforts on otherwise quiet fronts, influencing neutrals to join the war, and attempting to convince enemy countries to quit the war. Some of the cards bring influential personalities into the conflict, such as Hindenburg, Brusilov, Lawrence of Arabia, Foch and Pershing.

SoS is the comprehensive simulation of World War I. All the elements of the war are simulated, yet the rules are straight-forward and easy to understand. The main rule book is only 32 pages, including optional rules. A supplemental scenario book explains set-ups and special rules. A campaign game lasts 18 turns. It can be played by two players and also makes a great weekend game for four to six. No matter the number of players or the time available, SoS provides an opportunity to study individual fronts and years as well as the big picture. It allows players to examine the interaction of military, economic and political elements and events. You can recreate the sweeping campaigns in the east and the Middle East. You can try alternative strategies to break the trench deadlock in the west. Bishop - Andrew Preziosi - George Pearson

Often referred to as 'The Battle of the Bees', the Battle of Tanga, an amphibious attack launched by British and Indian forces, established the burgeoning reputation of Colonel (later General) Paul von Lettow-Vorbeck by the manner in which he successfully defeated the British-led attempt to capture German East Africa.

Some 80km from the border of British East Africa, Tanga was sited on a high plateau in German East Africa, and was its busiest sea port as well as being the site of the crucial Usambara railway. Already the subject of gunboat diplomacy resulting from a British warship on 17 August, Tanga had been spared from bombardment by an agreement extracted from the town's population to refrain from initiating local aggression. However the British subsequently changed their minds and ordered General Aitken to capture the German colony via a landing at Tanga in November 1914; it was to be the first major action of the war in German East Africa. Something of a fiasco from the start, Aitken's force of 8,000 insufficiently trained Indian reserves (from Indian Expeditionary Force 'B') were preceded by the inopportune arrival, on 2 November, of a British cruise, Fox, announcing the termination of the August agreement.

Alerted by this and Aitken's openness in his intentions - no attempt at concealment was considered - Lettow-Vorbeck was able to rapidly and substantially reinforce the town's local defence contingent (initially a single company of men). Believing (incorrectly) that the harbour had been mined, Aitken's force gingerly landed approximately 3km south of Tanga harbour on 3 November, and without having performed standard reconnaissance of the area. Next morning Aitken began to march upon the town, again without advance reconnaissance. Arriving German forces quickly and effectively broke up the ill-formed advancing Indian parties; by early afternoon the fighting had taken upon the nature of jungle skirmishing, occasionally interrupted by swarms of angry bees prevalent in the East African bush (hence the action's nick-name). One British soldier commented afterwards, what with a bunch of Germans firing into our backs and bees stinging our backsides, things were a bit 'ard....

Although numerically outgunned eight to one, Lettow-Vorbeck launched his own counter-attack on the evening of 4 November, backed by around 1,000 troops trained in the Prussian tradition. Rapidly overrunning the hastily (and badly) prepared British positions, Lettow-Vorbeck's forces obliged the British force to retreat back to their boats, an exercise that took much of the following day, 5 November. A costly defeat, the attack at Tanga had cost the British 847 casualties (including 360 fatalities). In turn the Germans had suffered 67 deaths (from a total of 148 casualties), but Lettow-Vorbeck gained much booty from the supplies left behind by the British in their hasty retreat, including machine guns, rifles and 600,000 rounds of ammunition.

Game scale:
Units: Each combat unit represents a company or platoon, an individual officer, 2 artillery guns or a machine gun section.
Map: Each hex equals 200 yards.
Turn: Each game turn represents 1 hour

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/1380/9101/products/tanga_7a5d6a64-2b5c-4373-98b3-4af00f187c01.jpg?v=1569058253
diplomacy
Diplomacy (2022 refresh)

For 2-7 players, ages 12+, playing time around 6 hours.

The Avalon Hill Diplomacy cooperative board game is a game of negotiation, cunning, and deceit. Moreover, Fatal Alliances focuses on the major technological changes the war brought on, on land, at sea, and in the air. China is in turmoil, and could potentially join either side. Japan is nominally an Ally, but Japanese expansionism is already at odds with the interests of other Allied powers. It is significant for a number of reasons; it was the first time that the French army used a large-scale attack with tanks supported by a surprise (i.e. not pre-registered) artillery bombardment, similar to the British attack the previous year at Cambrai, and it was the first time that full-size US divisions went on the offensive incorporated in the French army. But most importantly, it was the opening of the Second Battle of the Marne. It not known at the time, although suspected by many, that this battle was the death-knell of the German army.

French 10 Army, reinforced by US troops, had been assembled to strike the over-stretched German forces on one side of the Soissons – Château Thierry – Reims salient. The French had sixteen infantry divisions, including two US corps-sized divisions, as well as over three hundred tanks. The Germans facing them consisted of ten divisions, the quality of which varied widely although all had taken a battering during the Spring Offensive fighting. The German positions had been reached a few weeks previously during the final thrust of the offensives and therefore there had been no time to extensively fortify it; thus the battle was far more mobile than most of those previously on the Western Front. In addition, German artillery was sparse at the start of the battle because all of the heavy & super-heavy artillery in the area had been sent north for the planned Hagen Offensive in Flanders, giving the French a roughly 2.5:1 advantage in artillery. Although the battle continued beyond when the game ends, it was largely over by the 23 July, progress after that day being very slow, which is why the simulation terminates on that day. The German defence at Soissons was skilfully executed, particularly as the attack had been a complete surprise.

Decisive Victory 1918 is a series of three games that when combined will cover the entire Allied offensive in July of 1918 know as the Second Battle of the Marne.

This simulation illustrates the main features of late WWI combat. If the campaigns of 1918 were a far cry from the static trench warfare which had characterized the previous years, defense still retained absolute tactical advantage over the offense. Even with the element of complete surprise and greater numbers of troops and equipment facing a tired enemy, the French army was unable to maintain the pace of the advance attained on the first two days. This was not through any lack of competent commanders: not only could the defender always bring in reinforcements in men and equipment faster than the attacker, but the attacker’s speed, maneuverability, and ability to operate autonomously were still limited. It was very difficult, after the enemy's frontline was breached, to maintain any prolonged advance once the troops had progressed beyond friendly artillery cover and outpaced their logistical services. In addition, a few resolute defenders huddled around a handful of machine guns could inflict grievous casualties and delay vastly superior numbers. To adequately reflect these key aspects of late WWI warfare, the design incorporates elements and mechanisms that depart from the more standard hex & counter systems.

The game features mandatory attacks into multiple hexes, very rigid ZOC, and severe restrictions on disengagement and advance after combat. “Threat zones” extend beyond the standard 1-hex ZOCs and represent limited knowledge of the enemy’s positions, thus preventing unrealistic infiltration through narrow gaps in the frontline.

The Combat system is highly attritional, in terms of casualties and cohesion disruption. Reorganization is a slow process, conducted under the cover of the night. Attacking units rapidly deplete their offensive power. Defending units, on the other hand, are never completely eliminated, and retain (as “remnants”) indefinite residual defensive power. Defensive initiative superiority also translates into special “fall back” movement, which allows defenders to extricate themselves from dangerously outflanked positions and avoid encirclement.

Moreover, the system emphasizes the need for proper coordination and preparation in order to launch a successful assault: Artillery support, effective command control, and a fundamental factor, most neglected in the vast majority of wargames, time, to draw battle plans, register artillery coordinates, conduct adequate reconnaissance and rest and resupply the troops. Accordingly, the system requires assaults to be prepared one turn in advance.
